Outbreaks in English workplaces double

Outbreaks of suspected covid-19 in workplaces in England almost doubled from 22 (week ending 21 June) to 43 (week ending 28 June), Public Health England reported. The figures showed that transmission in workplaces was trending up, while it was declining in most other settings. This came after the government announced in May that people could start to return to work if unable to work at home. This has led to many construction sites, warehouses, restaurants, and cafes reopening, as well as non-essential retail shops more recently.

Care home staff and residents get regular tests

Care home staff in England will be tested for covid-19 every week, while residents will be tested every 28 days, the government said. Care homes looking after over 65s and people with dementia will be prioritised until testing is rolled out to all adult care homes in August. This move comes after a government study identified higher levels of the virus among care staff, particularly temporary staff who work in multiple settings and could pass on the virus to others if they are asymptomatic.

Face coverings around people “should be mandatory”
